AQHA LOWERS 2008 WORLD AND SELECT WORLD QUALIFYING POINTS

The American Quarter Horse Journal, April 24, 2008 – The American Quarter Horse Association has good news for members trying to qualify for the Bayer Select, Bank of America Amateur or FedEx Open World Championship Shows. During its April meeting, the AQHA Executive Committee approved lowering the qualifying points for those three premier events. With these lowered qualifying points, there’s still plenty of time for World Show hopefuls to qualify. For some, fewer points might mean fewer hours spent on the road during the show season and fewer stops at expensive fuel pumps, something every horse exhibitor can appreciate.

“In these days of increased prices for nearly everything, we want to serve our members in the best ways possible,” said Ken Mumy, AQHA President. “With today’s rising fuel costs, exhibitors are feeling the pinch, and by lowering the points, our hope is that members will be able to qualify more economically. We always look forward to seeing the best competitors at the World Show and want to help people who are World Show bound.”

Building on the excitement and improvements of last year’s Bayer Select, Bank of America Amateur and FedEx Open World Championship Shows, qualifiers are already up compared to 2007. In amateur competition, World Show qualifiers are up 143 from 604 in 2007 through March to 747 this year compared to the same period. There are 184 more qualifiers for the 2008 FedEx Open World Show compared to the same period in 2007. Last year, there were 639 qualifiers compared to 823 this year.

The majority of the increase in qualifiers can be attributed to the popularity of AQHA’s two newest classes, ranch sorting and performance halter. Points will not be reduced for these classes because this is the first full year exhibitors have been able to qualify for these events.

Following is the formula the executive committee used for point reductions.

Current Points:            Lower By:
2-2.5                            N/A
3-5.5                            1
6-10.5                          1.5
11-15.5                        2
16-20.5                        2.5
21-25.5                        3
26-up                           3.5

These qualifying point reductions will apply to the majority of Bank of America Amateur, FedEx Open and Bayer Select World Show classes. Tucker Robinson Rides Days Zanolena to Win 2008 NRCHA Stakes

3/30/2008

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes made for a week of excitement at the Idaho Horse Park in Nampa, Idaho. From the beginning days of preliminaries to the finals, there was about anything a true cow horse fan could want - great horses, great runs, great watching, and even a visit from Idaho Governor and First Lady, Butch and Lori Otter.
But the excitement built to a crescendo when it came time for the Cow Work - the last section of competition in the triathlon that makes up a reined cow horse limited aged event. As the temperature plunged outside, the action heated up the inside.
The stage was set. Tucker Robinson was leading the field after the rein work with a 439 composite on his 2007 Hackamore Classic Champion, Days Zanolena. He was seventh to show in the cow work and he kept the lead, marking a 217.5. The score didn’t really give him a “safe” feeling. “I wasn’t real happy with my fence work. The cattle were tough, though, so it was out of my control and we did the best we could. I just had to wait and see how it worked out.”
The waiting was amplified by the trio of riders that had a clear shot at the championship. Todd Bergen on Billys Cool Cat (High Brown Cat X NQH Lucy Lena), owned by Bar L Quarter Horses. Todd Crawford on 2006 Snaffle Bit Futurity Champ Smart Crackin Chic (Smart Chic Olena X Kwackin) owned by Singleton Ranches, and Doug Williamson on Hes Wright On (Lenas Wright On X Shesa Lota Nic) owned by D & S Quarter Horses. Marc Bourdet and CD Precious Peppy Win the 2008 NRCHA Stakes Non Pro Finals

3/30/2008

Marc Bourdet was the very last rider in the cow work of the NRCHA Stakes Non Pro Finals, so he knew exactly what he had to do when he rode into the arena at the Idaho Horse Park on Sunday afternoon. Anne Reynolds on Very Smart Flo Jo and Michelle Cowan on Wheres My Shine, were tied for the lead at a composite score of 645.5.

Bourdet put together a solid 214.5 point run that, when added to his herd and rein work scores of 221 and 212, respectively, clinched the title by two points. Relief and excitement were both evident as soon as the run was completed and the score announced. More>>>

Russell Dilday is 2008 World’s Greatest Horseman

2/25/2008

The adage “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” no longer applies to Porterville, California, trainer Russell Dilday. On February 24, Dilday, riding his great horse, Topsails Rien Maker, finally captured the World’s Greatest Horseman title – but the road to the Championship wasn’t easy. After the first two events, it seemed clear that it would come down to two riders – Dilday, and Robbie Schroeder. read more
